Our Mission
Our Mission at Dallas Animal Advocates is to make Dallas a kinder place for animals by promoting a higher quality life for animals served by Dallas Animal Services.
Our Programs
Compassion Campaign: Our goal is to make Dallas Animal Services a more comfortable and compassionate place for each animal that passes through its doors, for however long that animal is there. We do this by promoting good will among the staff members who care for our city’s unwanted, abused and homeless animals, and helping them combat “compassion fatigue”. Among other things, this program recognizes staff members for exemplary service and helps fund continuing education for staff members.
Fence Program: Dogs are naturally social; they thrive on interaction with humans and with other dogs. But a chained or tethered dog suffers psychological damage, becoming unhappy, anxious – and often, both defensive and aggressive. Chaining or tethering a dog is against the law in Dallas, yet it continues. Working with Dallas Animal Services and others, we identify dog owners who are willing to build or repair their fence, but just don’t have the money. It’s a joy to watch these dogs experience the freedom of a fenced yard, and to help their humans on the journey toward responsible pet ownership!
Heartworm Program: Heartworms are contracted via mosquito bites. They thrive in the animal’s body by attacking the muscle tissue of the heart. Left untreated, heartworm is deadly – but treatment is too costly for a municipal animal shelter. This means that in many shelters, otherwise-adoptable dogs must be euthanized. We provide stipends to rescue groups to help cover the treatment cost for heartworm-positive dogs accepted from Dallas Animal Services into their own adoption programs. It is literally a life-saver, one dog at a time!
Holiday Drive: Last Christmas, we furnished high-quality bedding for all the dogs and cats in the Lost and Found areas, which often don’t receive the same attention as the adoption areas of the shelter. Community support was so overwhelming, we will be making the Holiday Drive an annual tradition.
