We want our community to live up to the hope in his eyes. Let's face it, it makes no sense to allow these creatures to be born and then kill them for doing so.
Let's change this sad fact.

BOLT's Story

We first met Bolt in April, 2010. He was exceptionally submissive and frightened but did allow us to touch him after a bit of coaxing. He had developed a habit of jumping over or digging out of his yard which resulted in his being tethered after his owner had received several citations. The first thing that needed to be done was to get him neutered and vaccinated which was accomplished through Metroplex Animal Coaltion's spay/neuter program. The next was to repair the fence so he couldn't get out. The good news, his yard wass actually quite large and well shaded. DAA volunteers arrived early on Saturday, June 12 to repair the fence. Bolt's family was happy to have us there and were were very helpful. Height was added along the top of the fence which measured over 300' plus the base of the fence was augmented with stakes, ribar and welded wire to prevent digging. Here's another great story about Bolt.

WHY It Matters
Besides offering Bolt a healthier, happier existence, our volunteers are actively demonstrating that dogs deserve to be treated with respect and are part of the family rather than just an alarm system. There's a lot that can be said of hands-on, grass roots efforts. Our efforts have been welcomed far more than they have been rejected. Since we began working in this particular neighborhood, many dogs have been sterilized and vaccinated.
We now have a wonderful flyer, in english and spanish, that explains Dallas ordinances in everyday language. After Bolt's yard was completed, we approached several families with breeding dogs and offered MAC coupons. These families were extremely receptive and happy to learn there were options out there to help them. The coupons will prevent countless births of unwanted dogs!

BOLT's big moment on video!

Bolt was given his first bath after a visit from the 'furminator'. He handled it pretty well, felt a lot better and looked quite handsome afterward.

Our volunteers were amazing! On the left, is one of Bolt's family members, securing the welded wire to the top of the fence. On the right, Anthony and Elaine, bend the wire to prevent jumping. It's not fancy but it works!

Bolt supervised the assembly of his new house while volunteers continued with adding height to the fence. Almost time to throw the tether away!
Bolt gets a big hug from Diana Schmoll, who developed the concept for our fence program last summer. Toby came by to visit and helped Bolt inspect his re-vamped yard. Bolt also got new toys which he wasn't quite sure what to do it but we're sure he'll figure out what they are for.
